Healing Conversations

Healing Conversations (HC), Assisting Friends & Families of Survivors of Trauma is a seminar that takes the frustration out of relating to those you are walking beside on their journey to wholeness. Most helpers are trying to reach their survivors with reason and logic (prefrontal cortex/executive functioning). This doesn’t work very well because most survivors are operating from the mid-brain region where reason and logic (words) don’t reside. Helpers learn to use evidence-based strategies that will enable your relationships with survivors to heal and to become healthy.

What Happened to You?

What Happened to You: Conversations on Trauma, Resilience and Healing

Oprah Winfrey and renowned brain development and trauma expert, Dr. Bruce Perry, discuss the impact of trauma and adversity. Healing begins with a shift to asking, “What happened to you?” rather than “What’s wrong with you?”

Contact Candace@R199.org for instructions to register.

We will be reading this amazing book together for 10 weeks on Monday evenings starting in September.

Healing Arts Workshops

Creating art is a human right. Art honors and reflects multiple aspects of a person’s identity and personal experiences. No matter what one’s background, everyone has the power to create —they just need to be offered the opportunity. The Healing Arts Workshops provide this opportunity in a safe atmosphere to those impacted by complex trauma.

The R1:99 philosophy is grounded in the idea that the art workshops are a “Window of Time” — a safe, non-judgmental space where participants can authentically express their identity, hopes, dreams, experiences and truths. In this environment, participants can fully benefit from the process of creating art.

During a Healing Arts workshop, there is no right or wrong expression. Whatever supports participants in expressing, connecting and attending to their needs and feelings is the number one priority. The Healing Arts workshops are an opportunity for participants to practice how they want to live in the world. This includes asking what they need and choosing to share as much or as little as they desire.

Each workshop has a healing theme of voice, safety, resilience, empowerment, choice, etc. The outline of the workshops are:

  1. Introduction            5 min

  2. Demonstration       5 min

  3. Opening                 15 min

  4. Warm-Up                20 min

  5. Creation                  30 min

  6. Closing                   15 min

  7. Snacks                     15 min

Total                            1:45 min.
