Those who are called into Christian ministry, in all its various forms, will eventually experience compassion fatigue and, if not properly addressed, this will lead to burn-out. We start our ministries off with enthusiasm and idealism without realizing just how tough a journey we have ahead. Feeling overwhelmed by unmet needs, dreading going to work, feeling exhausted all the time, and feeling that you’re drowning in the suffering of others; are some of the signs of compassion fatigue.
Most helpers don’t do a very good job of following through with their self-care. Even when we do, we often find it lacking, and therefore push it off to the side.
