Overcoming Compassion Fatigue:

Rewiring Our Brains After Loss

"Rewiring our Brains" is the next workshop in our Overcoming Compassion Fatigue for Christian Caregivers Series. Being there for others is so important, but it can be challenging. We see so much pain around us. And if we are not careful, we often take that pain on.

People often have heightened expectations of us and we often have heightened expectations of ourselves, too.

Meaningful self-care strategies are essential in order to stay energized and continue to serve others in what can often be heart-wrenching work. Too often, we receive self-care advice that suggests that we take time off, go for a walk or run, or some other pleasant but simplistic solution. We know that while a warm bath or a hot cup of tea can be soothing, in addition, it's essential to have meaningful rituals and strategies to replenish and to be able to enjoy your own life and family when so much of your time is spent devoted to others.

As professionals, we are great at caring for those around us and often put ourselves last. Self-care is not selfish, it’s vital! We have to refill our own tanks every day and especially when we have experienced a personal or professional loss.

In the first half of the workshop, led by Vernicia Green, you will learn how the brain rewires itself after loss. The second half of the workshop, led by Candace Wheeler, we will create Journey Stones, a ritual experiential activity Stones, to help us heal.

Touchstones: A Collective Journey

Touchstone Journey invites a circle of innovation and practice

of art transforming grief & loss with Touchstones as a way to

connect deeply to ourselves and each other. There are many

layers to grief & loss and healing. From individual to relational,

family, community and systemic layers, legacies of grief & loss

ripple generations back. Actions of healing can ripple

generations forward. This project welcomes a "learning lab"

investigating Touchstones as an anchor for healing, from the

cellular to the systemic.

We will conclude with a candle light ceremony using our

touchstones to bring individual and collective healing.
