Individual Meetings with Your Therapist
|
• Individual therapy is 65 minutes
• R1:99 uses the tri-phasic model for trauma recovery: • Phase One - Safety and Stabilization • Phase Two - Processing Trauma Memories • Phase Three – Post Traumatic Growth. Perhaps you are forgoing therapy because you have felt victimized by telling your story in the past and are afraid of being triggered again. We want you to know that we will never ask you to give a full narrative of your story. It is up to you to determine what you want to tell us and when. Because trauma is held in the body, expressive therapies are often needed in addition to psychotherapy. During Phase One, we focus on helping you develop positive coping skills. These are usually done by combining Dialectal Behavior Therapy (DBT) with the expressive arts. We refer to this modality as DBT-informed expressive therapy. One does not have to enjoy making art for this modality to be effective because it’s all about the process. Most survivors find that by creating a visual it helps them retain their coping skills because just talking about them is usually not enough. Phase One is broken down into six modules: • Distress Tolerance • Self-Compassion • Acknowledging & Regulating Your Emotions • Connecting Mind & Body • Mindfulness & Relationships • Being & Functioning in the World Phase Two is about processing trauma memories. Many survivors, if not most, never reach this phase. If they can learn to regulate their emotions, then they feel that they can manage their lives. If you suffer from nightmares, flashbacks, and other symptoms of PTS, then Phase Two is recommended. Phase Three is all about post-traumatic growth. Discovering who you are now that a significant amount of healing has taken place. |
