Programs & Services for Survivors of Trafficking (complex trauma)

R1:99 provides programs and services for survivors of trafficking (children, adolescents, adults, & families) in the DC Metro area in a variety of ways:
  • Clinical trauma therapy
Trauma is a specialty in counseling and most of our training is post-graduate. Our therapist are skilled in cutting-edge trauma therapies to help survivors learn to regulate themselves once again. Clinical assessment, diagnosis, and treatment.
  • Expressive Art Transforming Trauma Groups
Expressive Therapies (i.e. visual art, drama, movement, and music). Complex trauma causes the mid-brain region (fear center) to be over activated and it doesn’t respond to words. The language of the mid-brain is visual art, drama, movement, and music. These are the modalities that we use to help the survivor start to integrate their brains and bodies back together again. Starting with the mid-brain, we link it upward to the pre-frontal cortex, and then to the right and left hemispheres.
  • Building Resilience

R1:99 is often brought in as experts in the field to help social service organizations and churches build resilience with their staff/volunteers who are working on the front lines with trafficking survivors. When we work with broken people, we will start to absorb their trauma. It’s just what happens—to both the professional and non-professional helper alike. The difference is that the professional helper has been trained to recognize and manage their triggers and know when they need to either step back/aside or take a break. Many people who desire to reach out and be part of the solution have their own unresolved trauma. They believe that by helping they will become healed. What usually happens is that they quickly become overwhelmed and instead of being an instrument of healing, they bring more hurt and pain to themselves and those they are trying to set free.
    • Healing Conversations (HC), Assisting Friends & Families of Survivors of Trauma
Healing Conversations (HC) is a seminar that takes the frustration out of everyday relating to those you are walking along beside on their journey to wholeness. Most helpers are trying to reach their survivor with reason and logic (prefrontal cortex/executive functioning). This doesn’t work very well because most survivors are operating from the mid-brain region where reason and logic (words) don’t reside. Helpers learn to use evidence-based strategies that will enable your relationships with survivors heal and to become healthy.
    • Overcoming Compassion Fatigue

In this seminar helpers will learn how to identify and manage their own level of stress and how to go the distance and avoid burn out. Part lecture and part interactive; serious, fun, engaging, and transforming.
